Mrs Newing, our specialist Spanish teacher, visits every Friday to teach all classes throughout Key stage 1 and 2. In Key stage 1 Spanish lessons revolve very much around learning and having fun through music and play. Children have the opportunity to hear authentic Spanish songs and stories and to play games to reinforce their language learning. In Key Stage 2, the emphasis is very much on language learning for a real purpose. In Year 3 and 4 the focus is on listening and speaking and in Year 5 and 6 pupils also have the opportunity to develop their reading and writing skills. All pupils at St John’s Meads are encouraged to be good ‘language detectives’ who are unafraid to have a go at speaking a foreign language and to use their knowledge of English to help them guess new words. Mrs Newing also places a strong emphasis on widening cultural knowledge and understanding. Pupils very much enjoy learning about authentic Spanish and Latin American festivals and events.
